Asafoetida (Ferula assa-foetida) is a perennial, pubescent plant with stems averaging 100 to 200 centimetres in height. Its resin is extracted by repeatedly incising the base of the stem and the thick, fleshy root, releasing a strong-smelling, milky latex.

In the commercial market, asafoetida is available in various forms, with two primary types:

Tear Form: The rarest and highest quality, consisting of pure resin tears.
Mass Form: The most common commercial form, comprising aggregated resin tears mixed with impurities.
